Coates went to several Baltimore-area institutions before graduating from Woodlawn High School, including William H. Lemmel Middle School and Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. He went to Howard University. After five years, he quit pursuing a career in journalism. Later, Coates completed an intensive French programme at Middlebury College.

Coates released The Beautiful Struggle, a memoir of growing up in West Baltimore and its impact on him, in 2008. Between the World and Me, Coates’ second novel, published in July 2015. It received an award and was a contender for the Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction in 2016.
