Margaret Eleanor Atwood was born on November 18, 1939. She is a writer, poet, literary critic, essayist, teacher, environmental activist, and inventor from Canada. She has written 18 poetry books, 18 novels, 11 books of nonfiction, nine collections of short fiction, eight children’s books, and two graphic novels since 1961, in addition to a variety of small press editions of both poetry and fiction. For her work, Atwood has received several accolades and prizes, including two Booker Prizes, the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the Governor General’s Award, the Franz Kafka Prize, Princess of Asturias Awards, and the National Book Critics and PEN Center USA Lifetime Achievement Awards.
She studied at the University of Toronto’s Victoria Campus, where she wrote poetry and essays in Acta Victoriana, the college literary newspaper, and took part in the sophomore theatrical tradition of The Bob Comedy Revue. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English (honours) with majors in philosophy and French in 1961. Atwood graduated from Harvard University’s Radcliffe College in 1961.
Mythology and fairy stories have influenced her poetry, which has captivated her since she was a child. Atwood has received several honorary degrees from various institutions, including The Sorbonne, NUI Galway, and the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
