Zora Neale Hurston was born on January 7, 1891, in Notasulga, Alabama. She was a writer, anthropologist, and author from the United States. She depicted racial tensions in the early 1900s American South. Their Eyes Were Watching God, the most well-known of her four books, published in 1937. She also published over 50 short tales, plays, and articles.

Hurston relocated to Eatonville, Florida, with her family in 1894. Eatonville has later utilized the location for several of her works. Hurston undertook the anthropological and ethnographic study as a student at Barnard College and Columbia University in her short career. Her major interest was in  African-American and Caribbean culture and how it influenced the community’s identity. Through her art and literature, she provided a different perspective on Black Americans’ lives.

For years, her works remained mostly unnoticed by the literary community. In 1975, novelist Alice Walker wrote an essay titled “In Search of Zora Neale Hurston” in the March edition of Ms. magazine. Hurston’s work Every Tongue Got to Confess, a compilation of folklore collected in the 1920s, was found in the Smithsonian archives and released after her death in 2001.

Hurston wedded Herbert Sheen, a jazz pianist and previous Howard instructor who subsequently became a physician, in 1927. They divorced in 1931. Hurston met Percy Punter, a student at Columbia University, in 1935. He was the inspiration for Tea Cake in her novel  Their Eyes Were Watching God.
