Woodrow Wilson Rawls was born on the 24th of September 1913. He was a well-known American author, widely recognized for his novels Summer of the Monkeys and Where the Red Fern Grows.
Rawls worked as a carpenter in the 1930s and 1940s. During this time, he began writing novels, such as Where the Red Fern Grows. In Oklahoma, Rawls went to prison twice for 2-3 years in prison. Rawls employed in a construction business building in the Southwest in the 1950s. Afterwards, he relocated to a construction area in Idaho Falls to serve on an Atomic Energy Commission contract. Rawls was a resident in a cottage nearby Mud Lake. He met and fell in love with Sophie Ann Styczinski, a budgetary specialist at the Atomic Energy Commission while serving there. On the 23rd of August 1958, the pair married.
Rawls’ writings were well-received, but he was arguably most effective as a motivational speaker. In 1983, he came to know about his medical condition that he is a cancer patient, Rawls visited 2,000 classrooms in 22 states. The couple had no kids, he believed he has a large number of children among his admirers. His pet hound, a Bluetick Coonhound, the only one who heard his initial hand-scribbled tales.
He received numerous prizes for where the red ferns grow, including the Flicker Tale Children’s Book Award in 1981, the 12th Annual Children’s Book Award in 1987, and the Great Stone Face Award in 1988. Summer of the Monkeys earned him the Sequoyah Children’s Book Award in 1979, the Golden Archer Award in 1979, and several others.
He passed away on the 16th of December 1984, in Marshfield, Wisconsin, at the age of 71.
