Raquel Jaramillo belongs to a family of Spanish immigrants. She went to the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan and then to the Parsons School of Design, where she concentrated on illustration. Before returning to New York, she spent a year at the American University of Paris and travelled extensively across Europe.
Palacio started her career as a graphic designer and art director, creating book covers for authors such as Paul Auster and Thomas Pynchon. She designed dozens of books covers for both non-fiction and fiction works throughout her career. She illustrated numerous of her own children’s books.
In 2013, she received the Christopher Award for Wonder, and in 2014, she received the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children’s Book Award.
